"ARTSBEAT; Johnny Hallyday To Play Beacon Theater
By JAMES C. MCKINLEY JR.
The French rock star Johnny Hallyday will perform a concert at the Beacon Theater in October, and it will be one of only a few New York appearances of his 50-year career. Heavily influenced by Elvis Presley, Mr. Hallyday is famous in France as one of that country's best rock 'n' roll singers, known for his deep, raspy voice, his energetic shows and his wild lifestyle. (He has 21 platinum albums.)
Although he shot a music video in New York in the late 1990s and sang at a charity concert in the early 1960s, Mr. Hallyday says the show at the Beacon on Oct. 7 will be his first real concert here. ''I've never given an entire show in New York City but I have an unforgettable memory,'' he said in a statement, adding, ''in 1962, when I sang on the celebrated ship, the France, docked at the New York Harbor, for a charity concert in the presence of Jacqueline Kennedy.'' Mr. Hallyday, 68, will also perform in Los Angeles on April 24."
